Armidale Ozonation and Biological Filtration Plant Upgrade

Armidale Dumaresq Council has recently upgraded their Armidale Water Treatment Plant to include ozonation and biological filtration processes as a barrier to organic contaminants such as algal toxins, and taste and odour compounds.

Prior to the upgrade, the conventional plant relied on the dosing of powdered activated carbon (PAC) to address the risks of organic contaminants. This process has been shown to be costly to operate, poses increased OH&S risks, and is extremely labour intensive.

On Hunter Water Australia’s recommendation, Armidale Dumaresq Council has replaced PAC dosing with ozonation and biological filtration and in doing so has provided a more robust and operator friendly barrier to algal concerns. A combination of HWA’s expertise and Council’s willingness to embrace innovation and technology has resulted in an award winning plant that provides the Armidale community with a safer, more aesthetically pleasing drinking water.
